How does swineflu spread?
H1N1 is contagious spreading from human to human through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person are propelled through the air and deposited on the mouth or nose of people nearby. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something – such as a surface or object – with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose without washing their hands.
Signs & Symptoms of Swineflu disease
Common signs and symptoms of the flu include:
- Fever over 101 F (38 C) in adults, and often as high as 103 to 105 F (39.5 C to 40.5 C) in children
- Dry cough
- Muscular aches and pains, especially in back, arms & legs
- Fatigue and weakness
- Nasal congestion
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhea and vomiting in children
Severe illnesses and death has occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.
Severity of illness.
Illness with the swineflu virus has ranged from mild to severe. While most people who have been sick have recovered without needing medical treatment, hospitalizations for pneumonia, repiratory failure and deaths from infection with this virus has occurred.
High risk groups for swineflu disease.

About 70 percent of people who have been hospitalized with swine flu virus belonged to high risk groups. This includes pregnancy, children less than 5 years,people who are old aged, or with diabetes, heart disease, asthma and kidney disease, suppressed immune system.In other words healthy people are able to cope up illness better than high risk groups. High risk groups with symptoms suggestive of flu like illness should seek medical care immediately.
